Erik W. Robelen -- Bioengineering. Mechanical engineering. Environmental engineering. Aerospace engineering. Not exactly standard fare in elementary school, but several million children have been exposed to such fields through the fast-growing Engineering Is Elementary program since it was launched in 2004 by the Museum of Science in Boston. Its overarching goal is to "foster engineering and technological literacy among all elementary-aged children."

Erik W. Robelen - When STEM education is discussed in the K-12 sphere, it often seems like shorthand for mathematics and science, with perhaps a nod to technology and even less, if any, real attention to engineering. But recent developments signal that the "e" in STEM may be gaining a firmer foothold at the precollegiate level.

Do you suffer from high blood pressure? If so, has your doctor talked to you about your salt intake, or how important it is to stay on your meds? Educating people about managing their own health is the single most important predictor of their well-being and life expectancy. More than genetics. More than environment.

Last week, Governor Rick Scott announced the number of open high-tech jobs is up 9 percent from a year ago, with 64,000 jobs available in science, technology, engineering and math fields. It shows, it said, "we're making significant strides and ensuring that Florida is a leader in growing industries." Despite the openings and Scott's commitment to bring similar so-called STEM jobs to the state, Florida universities aren't coming close to graduating enough students to fill them.
