Rick Riordan -- Admit it. You’ve fantasized about time travel. You’ve wondered what it would be like to visit your own past and slap some sense into your younger self. Perhaps you’ve imagined having dinner with Leonardo, or sitting in the emperor’s box in the Roman Colosseum.

THE Victorian government has raised concerns about the level of Australian history to be taught to year 11 and 12 history students under the proposed national curriculum. Australian history will not be taught as a stand-alone subject in the senior years under the national curriculum, with modern and ancient history the only two subjects to be offered nationwide.

Is Australian history boring?

Buldog sumitted ago via http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au (Views: 83, Clicks: 5)
View Story

Chris Rice pulled no punches. ''Australian history is boring and dull and largely irrelevant to the trajectory of the future of the world,'' he posted on The Age's website this week. Australians were global citizens who took their cultural cues from America, Asia and Europe. Students should be learning about these countries rather than ''some drunk bogans with beards (the Kelly gang) wandering around boring dusty towns drinking whiskey. Who cares?''

Like a time-machine traveler, the World War II Japanese soldier burst into the classroom. That dramatic entrance gave goosebumps to some of the 40 seated Secondary 2 students, even though they knew the sword-wielding Japanese sergeant was their history teacher, Mr Malcolm Tan.

Singapore: Let's not remain stuck in teaching a one-sided view of a cruel Japan

Liew Kai Khiun -- In the month when the world falls silent to mark the first anniversary of the devastating Tohoku earthquake, I was shocked to read of a Chung Cheng High School teacher's insensitive portrayal of a Japanese soldier as one who wields a sword, is cruel and one-dimensional ('Japanese soldier bursts in... to teach history'; Sunday).

Christopher Bantick -- British historian Simon Schama once observed of contemporary students, "What of history do they know?" It's a good question. A more immediate one is why don't Australian undergraduates want to know about their own country?

BBC - Dimensions

Dimensions takes important places, events and things, and overlays them onto a map of where you are. This is an experimental prototype for the BBC. The goal is to bring home the human scale of events and places in history. The D-Day landing beaches measured from London to Norfolk in the UK. How far would the Titanic stretch down your street?

Jay Mathews -- I know we are about to celebrate the Fourth of July. I have seen the fervent demands for better teaching of history after poor results were announced on the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress history tests. But I wonder if learning the details of our country’s story is as important as we think it is.
