Bill to be heard to drop common core curriculum

Legislation will be heard next week that would keep from taking effect next year nationwide academic standards that were approved three years ago by lawmakers and then adopted by the state Board of Education, House Speaker T.W. Shannon said Thursday. House Bill 1719 would repeal the 2010 law requiring the common core curriculum from being implemented by local school districts.

For every student who’s ever been frustrated by a teacher’s lack of… err… teaching, this one’s for you. Jeff Bliss, a sophomore at Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas, went off on his World History teacher earlier this week after being kicked out of class. In a rant which was recorded by a classmate, Bliss criticized his teacher for giving out packets instead of engaging with students.

Tulsa voters Tuesday proved their stalwart support of 42,000 students by passing a much-needed $38 million safety and technology bond issue by 67.4 percent. That's the good news. The bad news is that only 13,632 voters eligible voters bothered to show up at the polls.

Students from other states and countries would be accepted at the Oklahoma School of Science and Math under legislation advanced through a House committee Wednesday. Senate Bill 1131 by Sen. Clark Jolley, R-Edmond, would allow nonresidents to constitute as much as 10 percent of the enrollment at the state-owned boarding school.

Alyson Klein --Fewer students will take national tests in civics, history, and geography, thanks to across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration.The executive committee of the National Assessment Governing Board, on the recommendation of the NAEP—voted recently to indefinitely postpone the 4th and 12th grade tests in the three subjects for 2014. The exams will continue for 8th graders.
