Tech glitches force schools in multiple states to postpone proficiency exams

PiGuy sumitted ago via http://www.oudaily.com (Views: 83, Clicks: 17)  View Story

School districts across several states are rescheduling high-stakes tests that judge student proficiency and even determine teachers' pay because of technical problems involving the test administrators' computer systems. Thousands of students in Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota and Oklahoma have been kicked offline while taking tests in recent weeks, postponing the testing schools planned for months and raising concerns about whether the glitches will affect scores.

PiGuy sumitted ago via http://www.washingtonpost.com (Views: 60, Clicks: 5)  View Story

Valerie Strauss -- Add this to the list of problems with high-stakes standardized tests: Technical glitches in several states during the online administration of new exams have been so severe in recent weeks that officials suspended testing in some places, students cried and educators worried about how scores would be affected.

New Science Standards Draw Some Criticism

PiGuy sumitted ago via http://blogs.edweek.org (Views: 21, Clicks: 4)  View Story

Erik Robelen -- With the final Next Generation Science Standards now out for exactly three weeks, reactions are cropping up in blogs, news outlets, and other media. Although I've encountered no shortage of high praise for the standards, this welcoming stance is by no means universal. In this piece, I'll highlight a few examples of criticism and/or caution about the standards, which were developed by a coalition of 26 states in partnership with several national organizations.

Laura Thomas -- Since the Common Core State Standards emerged, people I respect have come out in opposition in a way that reminds me of a book from my childhood: The Monster at the End of This Book.

While tornado shelters are extremely rare in school buildings, every school site has an individualized plan for where students and educators are to take shelter in the event of a tornado. In Tulsa, they practice with three drills before the start of every severe weather season.

That underscores the experimental nature of the testing regime, which would be unfortunate enough even if the stakes weren’t high for students and teachers. But they are. Some students are taking the tests in order to graduate from high school, and in some cases, the student scores are linked to educators’ pay and job security. That puts the problems in a more serious light.
