Class action: Law school grads claim misleading reports of success

eduK8 sumitted ago via http://www.latimes.com (Views: 32, Clicks: 4)  View Story

Dozens of law graduates across the nation have joined class-action lawsuits alleging that law schools lured them in with misleading reports of their graduates' success. Instead of working in the law, some of the graduates were toiling at hourly jobs in department stores and restaurants and struggling to pay back more than $100,000 in loans used to finance their education. Others were in temporary or part-time legal positions.

Group will empower parents as lobbyists

eduK8 sumitted ago via http://normantranscript.com (Views: 34, Clicks: 5)  View Story

When K-12 education issues come up at the Capitol — which is usually every day — the usual suspects are at the table. They include representatives of the state Department of Education, paid lobbyists for teacher groups, administrator groups and legislators themselves. Missing are the parents who are usually busy working somewhere during the time those issues are debated. That issue was addressed in Tulsa several years ago, and a Parent Legislative Action Committee was formed.

In Birthplace of High-stakes Testing, Lawmakers Turn on Its Godfather
The backlash has now reached the chamber where this all started. When the Texas House passed a testing relief bill, lawmakers included two amendments aimed at Kress. Texas lawmakers, who have never exactly held business lobbyists at arm's length, have had enough of Kress pretending he doesn't have a conflict of interest while advocating unpopular policies that enrich his client.

Re: Schools in Texas may cut testing

The qualms are being felt in both conservative states and progressive ones. But exacerbating matters are the Common Core standards, national benchmarks in reading and math promoted by the Obama administration and designed to enhance critical thinking. They have been adopted by 45 states.
Oklahoma’s Legislature was roiled when it was discovered that hundreds of students wouldn’t graduate because of their scores on the state’s new high school exit exam. Efforts to overturn the requirements failed after an emotional debate.

The Texas House has approved 145-2 an education overhaul that cuts the number of high school standardized tests in core subjects from 15 to five. It also creates a base high school diploma that does not require Algebra II or high-level math and science courses.
