Mark Walsh -- A recent state court ruling backs the ability of school administrators and security personnel to rely on anonymous tips to thwart potential school violence. Citing the nationwide record of deadly mass school shootings over the last 15 years, the majority on a Florida appellate court said that "protecting students from gun violence is entitled to substantial weight" when judging the reasonableness of school searches.

Scott changes course -- again

In pursuing his re-election next year, Rick Scott has tried to brand himself as the "Education Governor." But a teacher assessing his effort would have to say he has failed to show consistent progress. Scott's decision Monday -- to continue implementing the national Common Core standards but to withdraw from a multistate consortium creating tests based on those standards -- won't improve his grade.

More opportunities created for Pinellas special education students

The Pinellas County School Board on Tuesday approved a new partnership with the City of Gulfport that will create even more work opportunities for the 100 or so students at the newly repurposed Hamilton Disston. There are about 1,200 students in the school district’s exceptional student education programs, and the extended transition program helps 18-to 22-year-olds with developmental disabilities that have already graduated high school find work and develop life skills.
