A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a fraction p/q where p and q are integers and q!=0. A rational number p/q is said to have numerator p and denominator q. Numbers that are not rational are called irrational numbers. The real line consists of the union of the rational and irrational numbers. The set of rational numbers is of measure zero on the real line, so it is "small" compared to the irrationals and the continuum.

The Long Beach school board voted Monday to push start times at the district’s five middle schools from 8 to 9 a.m. -- a cost-cutting move officials believe will also boost student success. The change will save the district about $1 million in transportation costs, Steinhauser said. The savings will be realized by making the bus schedule more efficient by staggering pick-up and drop-off times.

This problem challenges students to work systematically while applying their knowledge of areas of rectangles. It offers opportunities for higher level mathematical thinking (optimizing and graphing) in a context that doesn't require sophisticated mathematical content. This problem could be revisited when students are older and are able to use algebraic techniques (forming quadratic expressions, maximizing by completing the square).
